The change in points over the years certainly made sense, it is tough to finish in the top six these days, and cars are more reliable than ever. No fastest lap bonus point also.ġ991-2002: Points were awarded to the top six still but first place instead earned 10 points: 10-6-4-3-2-1, and again no points for fastest lap.Ģ003-2009: Now points were awarded to the top eight going as follows: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.Ģ010-2018: Points were not only now given to the top ten, but many more points were given out: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.Ģ019-present: Same points system as 2010-2018 but there was a return to the fastest lap bonus point. The driver with the fastest lap got an extra point.ġ960-1990: Points were then awarded to the top six, going as follows: 9-6-4-3-2-1. Something which has also changed over the years however is the points system:ġ950-1959: Points were awarded to the top five positions, first getting 8 points, second getting 6, third getting 4, fouth getting 3 and fifth earning 2. ![]() Since the inception in 1950, cars have had different engines, different fuels, different tyres, reliabilty is different, yada yada yada. Well, to be honest, there are many factors. Michael has won seven championships, while Alain has four and Ayrton and Niki have three… BUT there are some things to be considered that defined them becoming champions.
